For most of you, the Access Denied Folder means a trip to Best Buy and getting a replacement hard drive and then losing all your files because you had to reinstall Windows. Well, it doesn't have to be that way.
Here are the steps to ensure that you regain access to these drives/folders. I am assuming that you all have Windows XP Professional. If you have Home edition, you will have to log into Safe Mode to do these changes. Vista, you all are out of luck, for now until a future guide, lol.
Step 1: Make sure you are logged in as an Administrator or someone that has Admin rights.
Step 2: Open up ANY folder, and up at the top menu bar, click: Tools => Folder Options
Step 3: Select the View Tab and scroll down until you see the option "Use Simple File Sharing". Turn this option OFF. Click OK.
Step 4: Still with me?? Okay next step is to right click on the Folder that is currently locked. Select Properties. Then select the "Security" Tab.
Step 5: Towards the bottom of the Security tab, select the Advanced option.
Step 6: Here you can select which user to give access to, or just select the current user that you are logged onto.
Make SURE to have the option below that "Replace Owner on Subcontainers and Objects" is selected. Click OK when you're done.
Step 7: It will start to scan the folder, then you will get this message:
"You do not have permission to read the contents of directory folder name. Do you want to replace the directory permissions with permissions granting you Full Control?"
Select YES.
Step 8: Sit back and drink a cold one... you now have full access to that folder.
Step 9: Repeat these steps for any other folder or select the main folder that has a bunch of folders under it.
THATS IT!!
