Custom building can be fun, satisfying and overall cost effective. Please read my FAQ before continuing.
So you're ready for your first 'custom' built computer? Then lets figure some things out.
1. Budget
How much do you have to spend? A computer is much like a car in that you can get an endless amount of options that will rack up the price of a PC. Sometimes you don't 'need' all this. However some sites will sway you into purchasing them (like any salesman would). If you have 800 dollars to spend on a computer then thats how much you will stick to. If after the initial configuration you feel that you could spend a few more bucks, then great! But stick to the budget, this way you will always be in control.
The beauty of a custom built computer, is you get what YOU want, not settling for what the sticker says. Now you may not know what components you need, but you do know what your computer habits are. Are you a web surfing junkie, gamer, graphic designer, all of the above, etc...? All this helps in deciding what kind of computer is right for you. You can also decide what color your want your computer to be, whether it has a side window or lights... the customization is endless (of course within budget).
3. When do you want your PC?
If you're looking to build a computer in 5-6 months, then it's better to do a consult in 5-6 months. Prices fluctuate dramatically in the electronics world and a part that cost X amount now could be drastically cheaper in half a year. At the same time, new parts come out every week and if you're in the market for the latest blazing speed computer, then only look for a computer when the time is right for you.
